This weekend the Wildcats competed at St. Mary’s College for the LUCE Trophy. At this regatta, the top three teams, who have not previously qualified, would ensure a spot at the War Memorial Regatta. Villanova sailing fought hard all weekend to be one of the top three teams moving on to the War Regatta; however, with fierce competition the team pulled out in 8th place, closely following Columbia University.
Sailing in A division was skipper, Curtis Aaron, and crews, Brooklyn Curtin and Dylan Crider. Sailing in B division were skippers, Max Gillette and Brian Tiernan, with crew, Claire Coppola. Our B division placed sixth overall, just three points behind St. Mary’s College.
Day one of the regatta on Saint Mary’s River was sunny with four to ten knots of wind from the North. We managed to get 10 races off in A, and 8 in B. Day two had a constantly shifting breeze which made it hard for the race committee to set the courses. Despite the rain and tricky conditions, we managed to finish the rotations with seven more races.
We are so grateful for the Aaron family, feeding and housing us for the LUCE regatta. We even took a team trip with Drexel Sailing to the St. Mary’s County Fair, which most of our more northern sailors had never seen anything like it!
Congratulations to CNU, Stevens, and Washington College for earning spots at the War Memorial Regatta! We are taking this next weekend off from regattas and practicing instead for the Webb Regatta the following weekend.
